The island of Majorca is small enough that most of its major attractions can be reached from Cala Millor within a day. The capital of Majorca, Palma de Majorca, is less than two hours away. The old town is beautiful, with a towering Gothic cathedral overlooking the harbor. Cobblestone streets in the Medieval quarter lead from jewelry stores to antique shops.
Coffee shops and patisseries are on every corner, and tapas restaurants advertise chalkboard specials in town squares. If you’re looking for a more modern experience, try the shopping district, where locals garbed in designer labels have lunch at sidewalk cafes. There is even an El Corte Ingles, Spain’s largest department store.
Near Palma is Valldemossa, a scenic village best known as a destination for Frederic Chopin and his lover George Sands. Catch the Orange Blossom Express, a train that winds its way through orange and lemon groves, up into the pine-covered Tramuntana Mountains. Stop at some of the many villages to soak up local atmosphere and typical Spanish life.
Local markets occur on different days across the island, and you should visit at least one while you’re in Majorca. In Palma, there is a market on the Avenidas on Saturdays. The Manacor market is on Monday, and is a must-do if you hope to take back some of the famous Majorcan pearls that are manufactured there. The San Servera market on Friday mornings is only 10 minutes away from Cala Millor.
The Caves of Drach are a popular destination for visitors. Located just south of Cala Millor, these immense caves are filled with stalagmites and stalactites and contain one of the largest underground lakes in the world. Tours visit regularly from Cala Millor, or you can head down on your own.
If you’d like to see more of the Majorcan countryside, schedule a horseback riding trek into the mountains with Rancho Willy on Carrer des Comellar Fondo in Cala Bona. There are also a number of golf courses aorund Cala Bona and Cala Millor. In Sa Coma, south of Cala Millor, Auto Safari Zoo allows visitors to get up-close and personal with zebras, giraffes, monkeys, and elephants from their own car.
Whatever you choose to do outside of Cala Millor, consider renting a car to make getting around easier, as public transportation is limited. If you’d rather not navigate on your own, tours can be booked from the city to most of the popular sites.
